Ben Rice is a three-time Blues Music Award nominee whose blend of guitar fire, soulful vocals, and heartfelt songwriting has earned him acclaim across the roots and blues world. Raised in Portland, Oregon, on his parents’ eclectic vinyl collection, Rice developed a fearless guitar style that draws from Mississippi blues, soul, R&B, folk, and country. His music carries the spirit of timeless tradition while sounding fresh, inventive, and deeply personal.
Over the years, Rice has shared stages with Curtis Salgado, Johnny Rawls, and Vanessa Collier, and toured widely as both a bandleader and sideman. In 2023, he launched Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle, a horn-driven ensemble that channels the raw intensity of his live shows and gets audiences on their feet. With his new album Fallen Angel (2025), Rice continues to carve out his place as one of the most compelling voices in modern Americana and blues.

Mystery Box – a tiny traveling universe of clarinet, accordion, and
musical mystery. Blending Eastern European flavors, jazz, and original compositions, illuminated by the glow of deep listening – the kind that sparks spontaneity.
It’s two friends, two masterful musicians, opening a small box ofwonders, and finding inside a magical world accompanied by an orchestra of lightning bugs.
No two nights unfold the same way. The whole experience feels like a diorama come to life, wandering onto a stage, and gently insisting you lean in closer to catch every detail.

A Rare Night Home: Dave Fleschner & Friends
Two Sets at Hōkū Events
Thursday, August 13th · 7:00 PM · 1125 SE Madison St, Portland, OR
Featuring Alan Hager, Dan Gildea, Bill Athens and Edwin Coleman III
Dave Fleschner is currently on tour with blues legend Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, which makes Portland shows a rare occasion these days. On August 13th, he’s home for one night only at Hōkū Events — two sets of American roots music with an all-star lineup.
You might know Alan Hager — the reigning Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award winner for Electric Guitar — as the longtime guitarist with Curtis Salgado. But before Alan hit the road with Curtis, he and Dave had a duo residency at O’Connor’s Vault, where they recorded The Hager Fleschner Duo – Live From The Vault (available at davefleschner.com). Alan also appears on Dave’s The Blues Cabaret. This show is a rare chance to hear that partnership back in action.
Also on guitar is Dave’s good friend and longtime collaborator Dan Gildea — a Portland jazz mainstay who has played with Ron Carter, Leroy Vinnegar, and Shelly Rudolph. Dan has played on a number of Dave’s records, including The Dave Fleschner Trio – Deep Cuts, At Home, and The Blues Cabaret. Two guitar masters whose very different styles lock in beautifully together.
Joining on Bass this time around is Bill Athens. Long time performing and recording collaborator with Dave, you have also heard him playing either upright or electric with Sleater-Kinney, 3 Leg Torso, Trio Subtonic, the Rose City Chamber Orchestra, the Tacoma Symphony, Seamus Blake, Dave Pietro, Bel Canto Northwest, Dan Balmer, Mel Brown, George Colligan, Nancy King, Tom Grant and many more.
Anchoring the whole thing is Edwin Coleman III, this year’s CBA Muddy Award winner for Drummer and a longtime cornerstone of Soul Vaccination. He’s the drummer Portland’s best bandleaders call first — equally at home in a Hammond jazz trio, a blues revue, or a soul band.
The setlist will move through selections from the recent vinyl release The Dave Fleschner Trio – Deep Cuts, along with material from The Blues Cabaret and Live From The Vault, plus a handful of vintage blues classics and some new tunes from Alan Hager and Dave.

Kara Grainger is an Australian soul blues and roots rock singer-songwriter, based out of Nashville.
"Talk about star power, a killer voice and guitar skills. She said to the band as much to the audience, “I think tonight, we’ll just play some blues.” Playing slide guitar, Grainger began with rootsy blues, her voice full-bodied with plenty of soul. There was clarity there too with that unmistakable bell tone mixed with grit. We were in for some serious musicianship with Kara Grainger. Her vocals packed a punch and she played monster guitar solos that had the crowd whooping and clapping. Nice to see a female musician kick some a** like that". - Rock & Blues Muse

PNW Americana (AKA Moss Rock)
"Sturgill Simpson meets Mumford & Sons at a party that Van Morrison threw for Eddie Vedder."
B"Austin B. Sweeney is a Pacific-Northwest-born artist, currently living in his fifth-wheel camper, dubbed The Bandwagon, often found somewhere between the coastal forests of Oregon and the hot desert of Arizona. His sound combines the organic acoustic sounds of Mumford & Sons, Sturgill Simpson, and Van Morrison, with the electric west coast sounds that harken back to the Eagles, Pearl Jam, and Jackson Browne. His songwriting is self-referential and extremely personal, yet universal. It touches on themes of growth, freedom, anxiety, addiction, spirituality and the pure joy of an open highway."

Alan Hager-FREE SHOW
He first picked up a guitar at age ten and became a blues and jazz prodigy. He was playing local clubs as a teenager before heading to Boston’s Berklee School Of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny. A year later he was studying classical music at the famed New England Conservatory of Music, where he graduated in 1979. During the 1980s he toured as part of a classical guitar duo and took up teaching, which he still does. But he never fell out of love with the blues, especially the old Delta sounds of Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson and Skip James.

Claes Almroth on vocals, harmonica, accordion and keyboards, we have Houston Bolles on electric, acoustic and slide guitars, and vocals, with J Michael Kearsey on bass and vocals. We all sing lead and harmony vocals with a mix of original, cover and traditional songs Our repertoire spans the breadth of Americana music. We are a drummerless trio, so we regard ourselves as all being members of the rhythm section, no matter what we are up to.

Rare Westside Show!
Draw close and witness the wonders of Andrew & Courtney’s
Mystery Box – a tiny traveling universe of clarinet, accordion, and
musical mystery. Blending Eastern European flavors, jazz, and original
compositions, illuminated by the glow of deep listening – the kind that
sparks spontaneity.
It’s two friends, two masterful musicians, opening a small box of
wonders, and finding inside a magical world accompanied by an
orchestra of lightning bugs.
No two nights unfold the same way. The whole experience feels like a
diorama come to life, wandering onto a stage, and gently insisting you
lean in closer to catch every detail.
